I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the water main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, clear away any significant items, wipe up any water, and position a bucket to catch any drips. You also should switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
